I was 19 years old & I thought I knew everything.

I walked into a little music shop wanting to trade in my amplifier for a better one. The owner looked at me and said, “No. You don’t want that one. That’s the one you want,” and pointed at something twice the price. I didn’t listen. I bought the cheaper one anyway.

A few months later, I stood at a Walmart checkout with a $19.99 tent and a $10 sleeping bag, headed for a freezing weekend in the mountains. The old man behind the register looked at my gear, looked at me, and told me flat out I didn’t want that one. I didn’t listen that time, either.

At four in the morning, wrapped in that ten-dollar sleeping bag, shivering in the front seat of my truck with the heater running, I finally understood something: I thought I knew what I wanted. What I got wasn’t it. And deep down, I already knew it wouldn’t be.

Most of us do this more than we’d like to admit. We reach for the cheaper substitute, the faster fix, the thing that looks close enough, and we end up further from the life we actually wanted.

There’s a reason for that. And Jesus explained it, in detail, on the last night of His life.

The last night

The night before He died, Jesus stood in a vineyard with His closest friends and said something that gets skipped over almost every Easter:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.”

That one sentence explains why painful seasons keep showing up even when you’re doing everything right. Why the things you thought were good sometimes get cut away. Why staying connected matters more than trying harder. And why the fruit growing in your life was never actually meant for you to keep.

From Pain to Purpose walks through that entire passage, one season at a time:

  1. 01The isolationWhen the room gets quiet and it feels like you've been set aside.
  2. 02The repositioningWhen you're moved somewhere you didn't choose, for reasons you can't see yet.
  3. 03The pruning that feels like lossWhen good things get cut away and it makes no sense at all.
  4. 04The seasons that feel like momentumWhen growth finally shows up — and why it still isn't about you.
  5. 05The surrenderThe one thing that actually produces the life you wanted all along.

What’s Inside

  • Why painful seasons are often the process, not the punishment
  • How God prunes what's unnecessary to produce something lasting
  • What it actually means to “stay connected” when everything hurts
  • How He repositions you for impact you can't see yet
  • Why your purpose was never about what you personally get to keep

Seven chapters. Discussion questions after every chapter, so it works whether you’re reading alone or walking through it with a group.

Pastor Todd Tolson

“I didn’t write this book from a distance. Over the last two years, God took me through nearly every stage of this passage personally — the isolation, the repositioning, the pruning that felt like loss. If you’re in a season where nothing seems to be working, and you’re doing your best and it still hurts, I wrote this for you.”
